Tongue Tie (Ankyloglossia)
Tongue-tie, a congenital oral anomaly, is the non-medical term for ankyloglossia. This condition limits the movement of the tongue, that can lead to eating or speech problems. In tongue-tie, the lingual frenulum membrane attaching the tongue to the floor of the mouth is unusually short.
Tongue-tie surgery is performed under general anesthesia in older children. This entails cutting the lingual frenulum (frenotomy) or surgical revision of the frenum (frenectomy, frenulectomy, or frenuloplasty).
